Serial Number Lookup

Cartier has produced wristwatches since 1904 — from the Santos to the Tank to the Ballon Bleu. Their sequential serial system spans over 120 years of production across some of the most recognizable watch designs in history.

Serial Number Lookup

Enter your Cartier serial number — typically engraved on the caseback or found inside the case on older models. Modern pieces may have the serial on the caseback alongside the reference and case material stamps.

Approximate Production Year

Results are approximate. Cartier's production records are not publicly released. Serial ranges are compiled from auction records, service documentation, and horological archives. Some variation exists across collections produced concurrently.

Understanding the System

How Cartier Serial Numbers Work

Cartier uses a sequential numeric case serial that has run continuously since the early twentieth century. Unlike some Swiss manufactures, Cartier stamps the serial on the case rather than the movement — meaning the case serial and movement serial are separate. For authentication purposes, both should be inspected. In addition to the serial, Cartier stamps the reference number, case material purity mark (e.g., 750 for 18k gold), and the Cartier signature on the caseback or inner case.

Key Cartier Reference Numbers

Modern Cartier references use a letter-number code stamped on the caseback alongside the serial. The prefix often indicates the collection (e.g., "W" for Santos, "WGTA" for Tank Américaine in white gold). Case material is indicated separately by a purity stamp.

Where to Find Your Cartier Serial Number

Cartier serial placement has evolved across production eras. Here is where to look for each generation.

Modern Wristwatches (post-1990)

The serial is engraved on the caseback, typically stamped directly into the metal alongside the reference number, purity mark, and "Cartier" signature. It may require a loupe to read clearly.

Vintage Models (pre-1990)

On vintage Cartier pieces, the serial may be found inside the case (on the inner edge of the caseback or case middle), between the lugs, or on the movement plate — visible when the case is opened by a watchmaker.

Authentication Note

Authentic Cartier pieces will have the Cartier signature engraved on both the dial and caseback. The reference number and serial should both be present and legible. Absence of any of these marks warrants close inspection by a qualified watchmaker.

Note: Cartier also engraves a separate movement serial on the movement itself. This is distinct from the case serial — both can be inspected for authentication purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cartier Serial Number Questions & Answers

Where is the serial number on a Cartier watch?

On most modern Cartier watches, the serial number is engraved on the caseback alongside the reference number, the gold or steel purity mark, and the Cartier signature. On vintage pieces, the serial may be inside the case, on the inner caseback edge, or on the movement. A watchmaker can open the case to verify both the case and movement serials for authentication purposes.

What is the most collectible Cartier watch?

The Tank is widely considered the most iconic Cartier watch — designed in 1917 by Louis Cartier and inspired by the WWI Renault tank's overhead view. Vintage Tank examples with original dials, particularly the Tank Louis Cartier and Tank Américaine in 18k yellow gold, command strong premiums at auction. The Santos, Cartier's first purpose-built pilot's watch designed for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904, is the second most historically significant reference and has seen significant collector interest since its 2018 redesign.

Does box and papers matter for Cartier resale value?

Yes — perhaps more so for Cartier than for some other brands, because Cartier documentation (especially the warranty card matching the serial number on the caseback) is the primary authentication anchor. A complete set with original box, inner cushion, warranty card, and manual can add 10–20% to the secondary market value of a pre-owned Cartier piece, particularly for gold references and vintage models where documentation is scarcer.
